Teaching Statement

My teaching philosophy is to create an environment that empowers my students to utilize dance as a way of communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. My goal is for students to uncover their potential through self-discovery and the creative process. In educating the “whole human,” the objective is to have students take their experiences in dance class and apply them outside the classroom.

I believe each student is unique in their learning style and gifts.  Therefore, I strive to teach each student differently in a way that helps them to reach their greatest potential and promotes confidence and self-awareness. I believe understanding each student’s learning style is paramount.  This encompasses learning about their passions, ideas, dreams and being aware of their struggles and what skills they need to acquire to succeed professionally with joy. Then I know my student not just as a student but as a human being.

I believe teaching doesn’t start at the beginning of class and stop at the end. It includes taking the time outside of class to truly listen outside the classroom during conversations. I prioritize spending this time with my students and being aware of how students interact with their peers, professors, and themselves.
